Healthy Gums for Life: The Foundation Most Smiles Forget

Teeth get all the attention, but they stand or fall on their foundation. Gum disease is the leading cause of adult tooth loss — and its earliest stage is painless, common, and almost completely reversible.

The first warning sign is one most people ignore: bleeding when you brush or floss. Healthy gums do not bleed. Add puffiness, persistent bad breath, or gums that seem to be pulling away from the teeth, and it is time for a periodontal evaluation.

Caught early, gum disease is managed with focused cleanings and better home care. Caught later, it can require deep cleaning below the gumline, laser therapy, or grafting to rebuild what has receded. The earlier the visit, the simpler the fix — that is the entire story of periodontics.

Healthy gums also decide what is possible for the rest of your care. Implants, bridges, and full-arch restorations all depend on the bone and tissue around them, which is why our periodontal team works alongside our surgeons and prosthodontists on every plan.

A simple rule: if your gums bleed, tell your dentist — and if it has been more than six months since your last cleaning, book one. Your future smile is resting on it.
